    Municipal Theatre Massari

    San Giovanni in Marignano

The theatre was originally a church. It stands on the edge of the castle, and historical documents suggest that its north-eastern side was once part of the original walls of the town fortified by the Malatesta family. The first records of performances come from 1841, but the Condomini Theatre as it now stands dates back however to 1855, when restoration work on the building was entrusted to Rimini architect Giovanni Benedettini. The interior was given its present horseshoe form, with the first of the two galleries interspaced with columns, and the second by pillars topped with capitals.
Between the end of the 19th and the early 20th centuries the theatre presented a busy programme of events, with a growing presence of companies of actors, comedians and puppeteers from outside the town.
