Fiera di Santa Lucia

Santa Lucia Festival

San Giovanni in Marignano

This traditional event is back in its one thousandth edition; the Saint Lucia fair, the oldest celebration of this town, the origins of which date back to the birth of the town itself, San Giovanni in Marignano.
This town has always been famous for its numerous fairs, livestock markets and lively events that broke up the monotony of agricultural life.

Beginning in the 1800s, during the fair, the square was filled with merchants, acrobats, jugglers, puppets, poets, and storytellers and it represented one of the most important events of the agricultural year in all of the Valconca area.

The Ancient Fair of Saint Lucia is also a party and a celebration dedicated to Light (luce in Italian).  In fact, the name Lucia, which literally means “born in the early morning hours”, is associated with light and the Saint represents, in popular culture, the end of darkness both from a material standpoint – the end of winter was nearing – as well as from a spiritual standpoint given that it is near Christmas.
