UNESCO World Heritage – San Marino

    Repubblica di San Marino

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage on November 16th 1972 with the aim to identify and maintain a list of cultural and natural properties, submitted by the States and considered to be of outstanding universal value (World Heritage List).

Since 2008, the historical centre of the capital of this small republic and its Monte Titano have been among the UNESCO world heritage sites.
This state, surrounded and embraced by the Province of Rimini in the Romagna, and of Pesaro in the Marche is praised for its uninterrupted continuity of representative democracy which it has conserved through the centuries.

    The world heritage site includes:

    • towers
    • walls
    • gates and bastions
    • the basilica of San Marino from the 19th century
    • some monasteries from the 14th and 16th century
    • the Titano theatre, 18th century
    • the Palazzo Pubblico, 19th century

    • The Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino is the third smallest country in Europe after the Vatican state and princedom of Monaco.
    • It has nine local administration districts called castelli, organised in much the same way as the Italian municipalities.
    • The Republic of San Marino is ruled in a unique manner: Its two Capitani Reggenti (heads of state) have a very short time of office of six months which they serve together. They are inaugurated on April 1st and complete their term of office on October 1st, after which they may not be re-elected for three years.
