Village of Montescudo
Montescudo - Montecolombo - Montescudo
This historical town centre still boasts massive boundary walls, the Municipal Tower, dating from 1300, and an extraordinary and very unusual ice-house (that dates from the Malatesta era).
Visitors will also find hypogeous communication trenches, secret passages that lead from the lookout tower on the side facing towards the Rocca or fortress itself, a well, a steep staircase, and a huge brazier, which is still intact.
On 31st May 1954, during restoration work on the eastern part of the walls on the central ramparts, 22 medals bearing images of Sigismondo Malatesta and the Malatesta Temple were found inside a terracotta vase.
Albereto Fortress (Castrum Albereti): a guided trail allows visitors to retrace the history of the fortified castle from the archaeological excavations of the drawbridge, to the remains of the ancient oratory of San Bernardino and the bell tower that offers spectacular views of the hinterland of Romagna.
