Onferno
Onferno or Inferno? The first is the current name, given to the village in 1810 by the Bishop of Rimini, who did not appreciate the presence of a place with such a clear reference to demons and torment. The second is the original name, given by the local populace, who believed that the entrance to the cave was actually the entrance to Hell itself. If you imagine a wild and desolate place, with ravines and rivers that flowed out from potholes in the winter, the it can be easily understood that the locals believed themselves to be living in a "diabolic" environment. Legend has it that Dante once visited the village, taking this or a similar area as the inspiration for the first part of his Divine Comedy.
